Holy Moly! I had the same thought, but couldn't bring myself to say it out loud. It is the BS "false flag" crap that put it into my mind. Our present GOP is terrific at that that sort of thing, seeking to escape accountability for misconduct. I'm not sure if I'm happy you said it, or very sad.
